Locating object knowledge in the brain : A critique of Bowers ’ ( 2009 ) attempt to revive the grandmother cell hypothesis

چکیده
According to Bowers (2009), the finding that there are neurons with highly selective responses to familiar stimuli supports theories positing localist representations over approaches positing distributed representations (including PDP models). However, his conclusions derive from an overly narrow view of the range of possible distributed representations and of the role that PDP models can play in exploring their properties. While it is true that current distributed theories face challenges in accounting for both neural and behavioral data, the proposed localist account―to the extent that it is articulated at all―runs into more fundamental difficulties. Central to these difficulties is the problem of specifying the set of entities a localist unit represents.

Locating object knowledge in the brain: comment on Bowers's (2009) attempt to revive the grandmother cell hypothesis.
According to Bowers, the finding that there are neurons with highly selective responses to familiar stimuli supports theories positing localist representations over approaches positing the type of distributed representations typically found in parallel distributed processing (PDP) models. However, his conclusions derive from an overly narrow view of the range of possible distributed representat...

A fundamental claim associated with parallel distributed processing (PDP) theories of cognition is that knowledge is coded in a distributed manner in mind and brain. This approach rejects the claim that knowledge is coded in a localist fashion, with words, objects, and simple concepts (e.g. "dog"), that is, coded with their own dedicated representations. One of the putative advantages of this a...
متن کاملAn extension of the localist representation theory: grandmother cells are also widely used in the brain
ON GRANDMOTHER CELLS Based on considerable neurophysiological evidence, Roy (2012) proposed the theory that localist representation is widely used in the brain, starting from the lowest levels of processing. Grandmother cells are a special case of localist representation. In this article, I present the theory that grandmother cells are also widely used in the brain. To support the proposed theo...
متن کاملMeasuring sparseness in the brain: comment on Bowers (2009).
Bowers challenged the common view in favor of distributed representations in psychological modeling and the main arguments given against localist and grandmother cell coding schemes. He revisited the results of several single-cell studies, arguing that they do not support distributed representations. We praise the contribution of Bowers (2009) for joining evidence from psychological modeling an...
